Light. Legacy. Sustainability. Community.
This is more than a construction project.
It’s a turning point. Join us!
At the New York Mills Regional Cultural Center, our windows frame more than a view. They frame concerts, art exhibits, student workshops, community conversations, and the everyday magic of creativity in rural Minnesota.
Right now, those windows are failing us.
Windows to the Future is our plan to fix that — thoughtfully, sustainably, and together.
Windows to the Future is a multi-faceted initiative connected to our once-in-a-generation Capital Campaign to restore and expand our historic building while strengthening our long-term sustainability.
This project brings together building restoration, energy efficiency, public art, community engagement, and legacy giving — all centered around transforming our aging front façade and historic brick building into something that reflects who we are and where we’re headed.
Why This Project Matters
Our current windows and doors are deteriorating. They:
- Leak air and water
- Create uneven temperatures
- Contribute to condensation and moisture damage
- Increase energy costs
- Limit the types of artwork we can safely display
- Diminish the visitor experience
This is both urgent and essential. Replacing these windows protects our historic building, our artwork, and our long-term sustainability.
A Smarter, More Sustainable Future
Windows to the Future is part of a broader sustainability initiative developed in partnership with and supported by:
- Frankenthaler Climate Initiative of the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation
- Clean Energy Resource Teams (CERTs)
- Otter Tail Power through their IBD+ program, along with Michaels Energy
- Hammers Construction, our design-build partner
Our immediate goal is to reduce building energy consumption by at least 5% in the near term, while laying the foundation for a long-term strategy to decrease dependence on fossil fuels and ensure this historic building remains viable for generations to come.
Energy efficiency is one of the most practical and cost-effective clean energy strategies available — offering immediate reductions in energy use while improving comfort and performance.
By installing custom Low E2 Energy Star windows and doors, we will:
- Reduce energy use and operating costs
- Improve indoor comfort
- Protect artwork from excessive sunlight
- Prevent moisture damage
- Extend the life of our historic building
Energy efficiency isn’t flashy. But it’s one of the most practical, cost-effective climate strategies available, especially in rural communities where high energy costs hit hard. We want to model what’s possible.
The New York Mills Arts Retreat & Regional Cultural Center is honored to have been selected to receive a $100,000 award through the Frankenthaler Climate Initiative, a grantmaking program established by the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation in collaboration with Environment & Culture Partners to catalyze climate action in the visual arts.
Funds will be used to complete implementation of our Windows to the Future project. This project will help us reduce our energy use and operating costs, as well as protect artwork and improve visitors' experiences. This funding helps us achieve our organiziational goals and also reduce energy use while improving our guest experience.

In December 2025, NYMRCC was awarded a $10,000 Clean Energy Resource Teams (CERTs) Seed Grant to support the planning and community outreach needed to prepare the project for implementation, including creating educational materials about window energy efficiency, a community windows-themed mural project, open house preparations, project management, design work, and opportunities for residents to learn about clean energy directly through the project.

Through these educational displays and outreach, we’ll share what we’re learning — making clean energy solutions feel accessible and achievable here, not just somewhere else.

Community Mural Project🎨
When planning for construction, we didn't want plywood and barriers to define this moment. Instead, we decided to transform the temporary façade wall into a community mural gallery.
We put out a call for artists, inviting them to interpret “Windows to the Future” as symbols of possibility, sustainability, progress, and imagination. We received a variety of creative responses. The community helped bring them to life through public painting sessions. Be sure to visit the Cultural Center to see them in real life!
