This fall, the New York Mills Cultural Center is pleased to present Cloud Coverage, a temporary public art installation by Fargo-based artist Tobias Zikmund.
The installation features five large, quilt-inspired banners displayed at public locations throughout New York Mills. Designed specifically for outdoor spaces, the banners create bold visual landmarks while responding to the natural environment. As they move with the breeze, the artworks invite viewers to slow down, linger, and experience familiar places in new ways.
The banners will be installed at:
- "Raspberry Jam" — The exterior of the New York Mills Cultural Center
- "Long Wind" — The Sculpture Park
- "Cloud Coverage" — The empty lot on Miller Street across from Casey's Gas Station
- "Low Light" — The New York Mills School tennis courts
- "Sun Sliver" — The empty lot on Miller Street across from the public pool
About the Installation
Inspired by the visual language of quilts and fiber arts, Cloud Coverage celebrates ideas of place, connection, and community. Quilts have long served as symbols of care, creativity, and shared stories, bringing together individual pieces to create something stronger as a whole. That tradition resonates deeply in rural Minnesota, where quilting remains both an art form and an enduring part of community life.
Installed throughout town, the banners transform everyday spaces into an open-air gallery and encourage residents and visitors to experience New York Mills from a fresh perspective. Whether walking, biking, or driving between sites, visitors are invited to discover unexpected moments of beauty and reflection while exploring the community through art.
Gallery Reception
Please join us for a special gallery reception for Cloud Coverage on Thursday, September 17, from 5-7 PM. Learn more about this temporary art installation from creator and artist Tobias Zikmund, while enjoying light refreshments. Free to attend and open to all!
About the Artist
Raised in rural northeastern North Dakota, Tobias Zikmund's work explores the relationships between landscape, rural identity, and civic life. Through painting and public art, he creates opportunities for people to connect more deeply with one another and with the places they call home. Cloud Coverage continues that exploration by weaving together art, landscape, and community in a project that is both visually striking and welcoming to all ages.
Cloud Coverage will be on view for a limited time. We invite everyone to visit all five locations and experience how public art can transform familiar places into spaces of creativity, curiosity, and connection.
